Wisdom/Story/Inspiration: One of very few herbs that smells like sex and death. As a seasonal marker, this tree is host to the Fae and is represented by the Queen of May Day. Hawthorn is one of the 3 trees of the British Isles that are the "fairy triad"- Oak, Ash, and Thorn. It is said that where all 3 trees are found, the Fae are present. It is also said that a hawthorn tree in the yard indicated the home of a witch. At one time, it was believed that they were witches who transformed their bodies into trees. Witches were also known to perform their rites below the bows and thorns of hawthorn. The opening of her blossoms indicated the first days of Spring, and Beltane rituals often were performed after the first flowerings of hawthorn. She protects and strengthens the heart without hardening it. Beware her thorns to experience her protection first hand (which make excellent talismans). Hawthorn helps establish heart boundaries which are still open to love. Helps to feel safe and protected, and assists in forgiveness and empathy.
